Charles started his softball career playing fast pitch in the City Industrial League in Albany, Georgia in 1965. He continued playing in that area with a radio sponsored team (WGNY) until 1976.
In 1976 Charles came to the Tidewater area and began playing church league with St. Gregory's. In 1981 he served as a player/manager for the team. In 1980 through 1983 he was player/coach for Knights of Columbus State for Virginia. Placed 2nd in the Knights of Columbus Tournament at Pentagon Field in Washington DC.
He then assumed Team Manager duties for a group of friends who initially played under the name of Realty Executives and became Phil's grill and ultimately the original "Home Town Heroes". During this time the team won League Championship honors twice.
In 2000 he became part of the Senior program and played with Tidewater Relics 55 Plus Team. He also served on the Board of Directors for the T.S.A.A. and in 2010 served as the Commissioner for the T.S.A.A. National League.
Charles involvement hasn't always been softball as he coached 12 and under baseball for Arrowhead Recreation League winning the City Championship twice and recently in 2010 he coached a coach pitch team in the Kempsville Recreation League.
Charles softball career from player to coach to manager to youth coach has come full circle in 46 years and he remains strong today.
