Charles started playing fast-pitch softball as one of the original Foxhill players at the age of seventeen.  From 1950 to 1952, he pitched for his Fort Meyers Army softball team.  From 1952 to 1955, he pitched for the Foxhill city team averaging twelve strikeouts per game.  From 1955 to 1961, Charles helped his Foxhill team win three State titles and four Regional championships.  In his thirteen years as an active player, he average a .232 batting average and, after retiring, served on the Foxhill Board of Directors and as president for two years.  Many of those connected with fast-pitch softball considered Charles Ray Lewis to be one of the finest catchers in Foxhill’s history.
