Clay coached and umpired in the Great Lakes League in 1974.  He was Vice-President and Umpire-In-Chief for the league in 1975.  He returned to Virginia in 1976 and coached community league in 1977-78 winning two city championships.  He coached the Virginia Beach Stars (15 and Under) from 1979 through 1987.  His teams played in nine Metro tournaments (winning five and placing second twice), seven Regional tournaments (winning two and placing second three times), and six National tournaments.  Clay then coached the Virginia Beach Sun Devils (18 and Under).  The team played in two Metro tournaments (winning both), two Regional tournaments (winning both), three National tournaments, and won one National Qualifier tournament.
