Gene White

Gene White was involved for thirty-one years as a player, manager and local official.  From 1969 through 1999, he played with Azalea Baptist, North City Employees, Bobcats and Gusto Bulls.  He played in the Class A National Industrial tournament with the Norfolk City Employees and made the All-American Team.  In 1980 and 1981, he played in two Major Church National tournaments with Azalea Baptist.  He won three MVP awards.  At the time of his induction, Gene was playing in the 50 and Over League where he was All-Star for two years.  Gene managed women’s softball for three years and won the Metro tournament in 1977 and placed fourth in the Regional tournament.  His teams won three local tournaments.  As a local official, Gene began his career as the Athletic Director for the City of Norfolk.  He worked closely with the ASA Commissioners on a regular basis for the usage of fields for tournament games.  He developed the Four City Tidewater Tournament, which was still successful in 1999.  He also conducted the first Master’s tournament for men 35 & over.  Gene’s contributions contributed greatly to the success of softball in Tidewater.
