Jim ‘Hap’ Mullins *

A brilliant managerial career that included over 1,100 victories began in 1967 and lasted some eleven years for ‘Hap’ Mullins. During those years, Hap went after the best players around some of which included ‘Big’ Mack Thompson, Red Johnson and Richard Harmon. During Hap’s manager/player years, his teams took a back seat to no one including powerhouse teams like Virginia Door and the Virginia Beach Piledrivers, having won over seventy-seven major tournament titles. With sponsors like Virginia Fasteners, Atlantic Sales and Cee Bass Realty, Hap’s teams won three ASA State titles. The first title came in 1973 with a win over Virginia Door and a season-ending record of 128 wins and only 20 losses. The best year for Hap Mullins came in 1976 when his team won the third ASA State title, recorded eighteen tournament titles, finished seventh in the ASA Men’s Major National tournament and won the Richmond Memorial Day Classic in which 220 teams were entered. That year, Hap’s team finished with an overall record of 138 wins and only 13 losses. Overall, Hap’s teams went to four National tournaments, won the 1973 Regional tournament and won six straight league titles.
