Merv became involved in softball in 1966 as a player-sponsor.  His sponsored teams started competing on a National level in 1969 and in 1971 won the Virginia State Championship.  He carried his team (Virginia Door) to six consecutive Regional tournaments and four National tournaments, finishing seventh in 1973.  In six years of top level play, his team won fifty-one tournaments, including the C.A.C. a record five times.
