Nelson DuVal started playing baseball in 1935, which included stints with the Norfolk Orioles, Abbott’s Collegians (1943 State Champions), Norfolk Tars (no errors in two years of play.) and with C.A.C. He also participated in fast-pitch softball as a player/manager from 1940 through 1952. His teams won four District titles and played in four State tournaments and one National tournament in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. One year, he batted eight hundred. He made the All-Star Team four times. With Robbie’s Barbeque and Bybees in the Portsmouth League, his team won the title each year. Famous sportswriter Abe Goldbalt wrote in the Virginian Pilot that Nelson DuVal was the best player he had seen come down the pike. Nelson DuVal was inducted in the Legend’s category as a fast-pitch player.
