Richard ‘Dick’ Bowie

Inducted 1987

As an umpire, Dick was at the top from the start.  He was in his twenty-first year of a star-studded career at time of induction, with no retirement in sight.  During his career, Dick umpired in eight ASA Men’s Major Slow-Pitch Regional tournaments, three Men’s Major Fast-Pitch Regional tournaments, three Women’s Major Slow-Pitch Regional tournaments, one Men’s Class A Fast-Pitch and one Men’s Major Slow-Pitch Industrial Regional tournament.  On the National level, Dick worked three ASA Championships that included the 1977 Men’s Open Slow-Pitch, Men’s Class a Slow-Pitch and, in 1986, the Men’s Major Fast-Pitch in Spokane, Washington.  Locally, Dick had the finals of every major Tidewater tournament ever played including the P.I.T., C.A.C, Firecracker Open, Red White and Blue and the Municipal League playoffs.  To go along with his umpiring duties, Dick helped found the TVASA Umpires’ Association in 1972, was the secretary in 1972 and 1973, Commissioner for the organization from 1974 to 1977 and a Deputy Umpire-In-Chief under Conrad Parker from 1972 through the time of his induction.
