William ‘Hunky’ Archer *
Inducted 1988
‘Hunky’ Archer was a star at the game of fast-pitch softball at the age of twelve. His star-studded career lasted over thirty-two years. Hunky was probably the best infielder to ever take the field in Tidewater. Through the years, Hunky played in three ASA World Fast-Pitch Tournaments while playing on teams such as Navy Yard, Parker’s Open Air Market, and Hecht’s. During one stretch of his career, he led his team to five straight Class A League titles. To show his stamina, Hunky was selected to the All-League Team in Portsmouth in 1959 while playing with Hecht’s – this was some thirteen years after being the only unanimous selection to the Class A League Team (All-Star) in 1943. In his spare time, Hunky would pitch for his teams, and, in 1958, led his Park’s Open Air Market team to the district title with four pitching victories in the tournament. Other individuals to play with Hunky included J. Herbert Simpson, Bobby Hoffman, Lin Cherry and Bullett Alexander.
