William ‘Bill’ Ward began his softball playing career as catcher for Wesley Memorial Methodist Church’s fast-pitch team in 1950 and continued with them through 1952.  During the period from 1954 through 1956, he was catcher and pitcher for the Knights of Pythias’ Charity Lodge’s slow-pitch team.  From 1957 through 1965, he pitched for Duncan and Gifford’s softball team and was awarded the Commonwealth League Championship for 1957-58.  During the period from 1961 through 1963, he led Duncan and Gifford’s team to the Chesapeake Athletic Championship of the Invitational Softball Tournament and was winning pitcher for the Virginia Beach Slow-Pitch Tournament in 1963.  He was selected to pitch for the Slow-Pitch All-Stars for the years 1963, 1964 and 1965.  Bill Ward won the Municipal League Championship four times and pitched and won over 100 ballgames during his softball career.  Among league play, playoffs, and tournaments, he won over 300 ballgames.
